About

I am a Professor of Philosophy and Women’s Studies and Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at Binghamton University. I have been at Binghamton University since 1991. I received my B.A. (in philosophy and sociology) and my M.A. (in philosophy) from Tel-Aviv University and my Ph.D. (in philosophy) from Ohio State University. I am a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Binghamton University Graduate School’s Faculty Excellence Award in Graduate Mentoring. My areas of research and teaching include war and terrorism, democratic theory, political and social philosophy, and feminist theory.

My current projects are:

Reflections on Just War: Essays on War and Terrorism. This is a book of thematically related both published and unpublished essays on war and terrorism.

Fragile Politics: Violence and the Margins of Democracy. This is a planned book whose chapters explore the relations between democratic politics and violence. Its basic premise is inspired by Hannah Arendt’s claim, itself inspired by the ancient Greeks and Romans, that democratic politics are impossible without the marginalization of violence. This claim has historical reverberations in modernity and can be found in, for example, Hobbes, Rousseau, and of course, Kant. Arendt attempted to rethink it in light of the experiences of WWII. I believe that it needs to be rethought again given post Cold War geopolitical changes, and the changes that war has been undergoing.
