About
M.A. Bulgakov creates spatial meaning in Master and Margarita by drawing on at least three textual categories: realia (historical prototypes), literature (literary prototypes), and his own spatial images within the novel (leitmotifs). In my dissertation I 1) analyze these categories in Master and Margarita using a theoretical approach inspired by the theories of Iurii Lotman, Vladimir Toporov and Zara Mints, 2) examine the manuscripts of the novel for evidence, and 3) identify and explicate historical and literary prototypes and leitmotifs for spatial constructions in the novel. Finally, I explore the implications of Bulgakov’s use of space in Master and Margarita for the study of theme and character and suggest potential application for other Russian works of literary art.
